…by his passions as opposed to his reason. His contemptuous attitude to the heath folk, shows him to be an outsider, incapable of understanding their simplicity. He came to the heath due to his failed career as an engineer and he wishes passionately to escape it. However his impetuous nature and lack of regard for those in his life lead us to believe that his tragic end will come before the escape he so desires.
