The first time I read Miller Williams poem "A Poem for Emily" I did not see any major theme standing out. It is a simple poem written in simple everyday language. I did not see any similes, metaphors, symbols or any of the other devices that other poets often use to confuse me. I do not like it when I read a poem and have no idea what I just read. The last stanza brings the poem full circle. It shows that the main inspiration for the poem is the grandparents love and devotion. He was there when the child was born and that he loved the child enough to sit there while she slept. He wants his great grandchildren to know that he loved their mother that much and if he was still around he would love them that much too.
