Robert Edward Lee, son of Henry and Ann Hill Carter Lee, was born on January 19,1807. Lee lived his youth in Alexandria, Virginia. Martha Washington's great granddaughter, Mary Ann Randolph Custis married Lee in 1831. As a young man he was exposed to Christianity and accepted its faith. Army of Northern Virginia to Grant and the Symbol of the South and the General in Chief was no longer. Following the war Lee was almost tried as a traitor, but was only left with his civil rights suspended. Lee was offered the post of President of Washington University where he served until his death in 1870. The school was later renamed Washington and Lee. As a final note President Gerald Ford had Lee's citizenship restored.
