Although the main characters of each book were affected in very different ways, both books portrayed the emotional heartache and physical struggles that the war caused, leaving the men with a sense of unfulfillment and disillusion. Their young lives, which were just beginning to unfold, had already been aged and broken by the cold reality of war, leaving them truly lost.
