…In this sense, his physical journey is merely an exterior casing for his inner passage. On this journey Jim sits and talks too a missionary lady while contemplating death. Before long, he finds himself praying with the missionary. Consequently, Ballard uses contrast to convey Jim's rejection of atheism, and acceptance of God, which in turn conveys his maturity. In conclusion, through the physical journey that a person embarks upon, a deeper, inner journey is started.
