The fact that women, no matter how important they are to the story, are still used as a foil or background against which the poet is able to illustrate a certain quality of men. The women are there to help the reader dive deeper in the male psyche. This enables the reader to better understand the trials and tribulations of the novel, which in turn makes Homer's two epics so widely read and enjoyed.
