From a historical point of view, is the Reformation an act of religious reform or an act of political revolution?

The initial purpose of the Reformation was to abolish the corruption in the Catholic Church. Eventually, due to the failure of that, a new religion was formed with a new theory upon religion, which the Catholics did not accept. The Reformation not only brought new religion, but new ideas, which lead to further development. That development was halted when the Catholic Church was in power. The reason that the Reformation was a political act rather than a religious reform was that the Reformation commenced the Renaissance. The Renaissance was one of the most significant things historically.
