Taking advantage of suspicions between the European rivals and sensing England's desire to be generous in order to pry America out of the French orbit, John Jay and Benjamin Franklin secured not only British recognition of American independence but also the entire region from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River as part of the United States. The final Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3, 1783.
