Utilizing one of the main characters of the play, Mrs. Alving, Ibsen communicates his own ideas of inheritance and the impact of the past. Ibsen successfully generates a protagonistic view of Mrs. Alving for the audience; therefore the views of this character reflect the actual views of Ibsen. …this character's dialogue, the reader/audience comes to the conclusion that Ibsen feels that traditionalistic "ghostly" ideas from the past have a negative effect on society, and new ideas should be utilized. Ibsen is obviously against being conservative, as Mrs. Alving is also. Ibsen is for being open minded. This view, when the play was written and performed, would be extremely controversial for the times, this is why this play is so wonderful and outspoken.
