In March 1953, Kruschev became a new leader of Russia after Stalin's death. Many western powers hoped that he would start a 'thaw' in the Cold war. Unlike Stalin's foreign policy, Kruchev's foreign policy opened up to western powers and the western powers were able to talk to the leader of USSR directly. Then eventually in 1960, the tension between US and USSR was reaching the highest point because Kruschev made a trading agreement with Cuba. This was when the Cold War got really lucid.
