more understandable. However, I think the author intended for this poem to express the seriousness of the narrator and his pursuit of his romantic interest's heart. The narrator clearly wants the lady to realize how true and deep his love for her is. When he says, "look long, look carefully; this is for you," he is letting her know that despite the grim consequences that love might ensue, he will love her with profound willingness.
