…nd Armored Division was ordered to liberate the city of Paris, and on August 24, the next morning, the Germans surrendered to the forces. On August 26, General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French, made a parade down the Champs-Elysees to Notre Dame and there a mass celebrated. By early September all but a tiny portion on France had been liberated. That winter would see much fighting and the Germans were to be completely beaten.
