nd Armored Division was ordered to liberate the city of Paris, and on August 24, the next morning, the Germans surrendered to the forces. On August 26, General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French, made a parade down the Champs-Elysees to Notre Dame and there a mass celebrated.
