The Puritans were deeply religious people. The Bible was their guide for life. They were called "people of the book." They didn't agree with the Church of England. They tried to "purify" the Church of England and that's why they were called Puritans. Because of their actions, they were often sent to jail, whipped and even hanged.
The Puritans came to America for freedom of religion. in 1624, they formed the Massachusetts Bay
