…came upon Sallie lying among the corpses of the regiment. She was very much alive and loyal to a fault had remained with her fallen master. Sallie was taken by the soldiers, nursed back to health, and informally adopted by some of the men as the regiment's mascot. Apparently she became a favorite of most of the 11th Pennsylvania's soldiers and remained so until she was killed at the Battle of Hatcher's Run, Virginia in 1864.
