The 18th century is a period in history where people believed they were in a new age; enlightened by reason, science, and respect for humanity. Prior centuries were considered ignorant and dark, inspiring philosophers and revolutionaries to express the power of human reasoning. The economic benefits on colonial enslavement had mercantilist appeal, allowing the French to have a stable income and gain national wealth. Religious society overlooked the brutality of slavery because of the expansion of religious ideals imposed on slaves and ultimately, the economic advantage. Slavery was used in the 18th century as a scapegoat for immediate affluence.
