In literature there are many kinds of relationships. These relationships can have a major influence on the character's decisions. A character who is usually calm and thinks carefully about the consequences of his actions will act irrational at times because of relationships. In "A&P", Sammy thought he impressed the girls and as he left the store he realized that they were long gone. Even a person who is usually composed can sometimes act irrationally. In the end, the pleasure they got from their decisions didn't last very long.
