The crushing drama that is contained in her life is portrayed on the screen with great emotion. The most notable scenes consist only of Madame Bovary expressing, very emotionally, her depression at her current situation. I think Chabrol makes a powerful statement about how permanent marriage is and how carefully one should choose a spouse.
