Richard is certainly an evil character, a fact made clear throughout the play. The extent of his evil is shown in events including the death of Clarence and his treatment of Anne,. In the end, he does acknowledge the horrors of what he did, when forced to confront them. This all leads me to believe that while Richard is by all means an evil character, he is not truly evil, and he also did have his own justifications for his actions.
