Bush selected Rice in 1989 to be his advisor on soviet Affairs. In that year, she joined the National Security Council. On September 1, 1993, Rice became the youngest and the first Black academic chief and budgets Officer at Stanford University. In 2000 she served as Bush's top national security advisor during his presidential campaign and after his victory, Rice accepted the position of national security advisor in his administration. She is the first woman to hold this position.
