I believe that Fitzgerald was trying to explain to the reader that the life in the North was based on the same ideas and concepts of the West even though the North seemed as a total different world. In one point, Nick tells us that the Island is " a fresh, green breast of the New World" (The Great Gatsby p.189), as to say that Long Island was this "breast" and the North, the New World.
