…without slaves in the South their economic interests would be different. McPherson stated that the differences in economics and culture between the two were the cause of the war. Without the slaveholders, the culture in the South would not have been so unique and they would have not felt like their culture was under attack. Basically without the slaves in the South, there would not have been such a tragic ending in the United States.
