Sarah Emma Edmonds was born on December of 1841 in Nova Scotia, Canada. She had a rough and difficult childhood. Sarah had very little education and her dad resented her because she was a girl. Her father hated her so much that he took it upon himself to abuse her. Reasons for resentment was mainly because Sarah was a girl. military and continue my service to the Union. Leaving Cairo, where I have been treated for the disease of malaria, I will travel the distance to Washington. Knowing that I can not return to the army, I think my duty now is to work as a nurse. I don't know how long I will be working for but I just want to contribute in the war in one way or another.
