…as perhaps the finest work to emerge from the Victorian era. Most humorous perhaps is discovering that the resulting marriage between Ernest and Gwendolen is one rooted in incest. Much discussion has been made over the pun in the title, claiming that none of the characters are earnest. However, the two men and two women might in fact be such, considering their irreverent behavior set them far apart from that of the average English aristocrat.
