In the Republic, Socrates is talking about building an imaginary state in which he believes to be ideal, and perfect. He also tries to reason why the life of a just man is far superior to that of an unjust man.

would make the ideal state. A place where rulers would rule for the sake of what is just and good for the people as a whole, not for the sake of money and power. While the republic was a good idea in theory, it was not a very practical one. People have instincts, and are basically good, but they are not perfect. Therefore, the idea of a perfect society is a ridiculous one.
