The Scarlett Letter, and its power over Pearl.

Although it is Hester and Dimmesdale that have brought their punishment upon themselves, it is Pearl, their daughter, whom must be the puppet of the letter. …done its work. At the end of the story, Pearl has grown older, and has completely skipped her childhood, doing the work of the letter instead.
