Henry Cabot Lodge, a Republican, and chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, wanted to change article 10 of the treaty. This point called for the League to protect any member whose independence or territory was threatened. Lodge opposed this since he thought it would lead to US involvement in future European wars. Wilson refused to compromise however. In the end, the US did not sign the peace treaty with Germany until 1921.
