It is a reflection of Palamon's and Arcite's view of Emilia as an object. Shakespeare has artfully blended the comedy of the jailer's daughter object with the tragedy of the Emilia object and in so doing has magnified his point. Shakespeare has dramatized how men make objects of women. Perhaps one of his motives was to get the men of his day to realize that they treat women as objects and that they should not.
