Were the founding fathers elitists?

The Constitution of the United States was developed and endorsed by politicians who were well read in political philosophy and were not elitists as Beard suggests. The founding fathers wanted to even the powers among different areas of government to form a strong central government without becoming an autocracy. …fathers were not elitists attempting to make a government profitably only to themselves. They discussed issues at much length and compromised solutions that would please the masses. They could not have agreed enough amongst themselves to have made one single document which they all considered profitable. And finally, they, like all the commoners of the States, did not wish to return to tyrannous rule but wanted to become one great functioning power of the world.
