WORLD WAR I On June 28, 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. He was murdered at Sarajevo, the capital of the Austrian province of Bosnia. The assassin was Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian terrorist. Austria claimed that Serbian government officials also belonged to Princip's group. Harding was elected president with an overwhelming Republican majority in Congress. A resolution was passed by Congress and signed by the president on July 2, 1921, ending the state of war between the United States and Germany and Austria-Hungary.
