The Crucible In 1692 a new era of Devils and witchcraft began in Salem, Massachusetts. In the Crucible we discover that this craze was caused by a group of young girls who were "only sporting" according to Abigail Williams. In order to avoid severe punishment these girls began to pretend that they were possessed.
