Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was born on March 30, 1853, in the village of Zundert. At the age of sixteen, he started work at the Hague gallery of the French art dealers, Goupil & Co.. His uncle was a partner in this firm and his younger brother Theo later worked there too.
After his dismissal from the firm, he taught briefly in England before training as an evangelist. He was appointed to the Borinage mining region but in 1879

She did much to gain the recognition that her brother-in-law deserved especially after the correspondence between the two brothers was published in 1914. Did she have such lofty ideals?
